The poem as concert: Lidner, Oxenstierna and the unity of the long poem TEGNÉR, ESAIAS (1782–1846), Swedish writer, was born on the 13th of November 1782, at Kyrkerud in Wermland. His father was a pastor, and his grandparents on both sides were peasants. His father, whose name had been Esaias Lucasson, took the surname of Tegnerus—altered by his fifth son, the poet, to Tegnér—from the hamlet of Tegnaby in Småland, where he was born. Tegnér’s early poems are written in a classicistic style. Battle Song for the Skåne Militia (1808) and the epic poem Sweden (1811) reflect the events of the Russo-Swedish war (1808–09). Although Tegnér was a central figure in Swedish romanticism, his works were characterized by the rationalism and clarity of poetic thought and style associated with the aesthetics of the Enlightenment.
